The History of Chinese Large Cabinets:
In traditional Chinese homes, the architectural structures of houses constructed did not consist of any built-in closets. As a result, storage for clothing, paintings, and accessories were all placed inside cabinets. The most popularly used types of cabinets in China were tall wardrobes, square-corner cabinets and bookshelves display-like cabinets. Chinese Large Cabinets were constructed in all ranges of sizes and shapes. As well, metal hinges and decorative metal hardware were installed for easier door movements, lock mechanisms for safety purposes and doorknobs for opening and closing. Not only were Chinese Large Cabinets built by hand and without nails, craftsmen applied their own artistic designs on carving decorative motifs along the door panels and around the cabinets. Some aspects that distinguished Chinese Large Cabinets from western cabinets were the intricate ornate carving designs and decorative hand painting designs done on the cabinets. The Chinese carpenters often incorporated carving styles of the roughly six categories, which are archaic designs, geometric designs/rhythmic patterns, animal motifs, botanical motifs and calligraphic design to pieces. Such examples are the double-coin motif that stands for "double happiness", mythical icons like the dragon and phoenix, and the most popular calligraphically symbol "FU" which stands for good fortune.
